1. The Hidden Door

Lila pulled a dusty book and the whole shelf swung open.

Behind it glowed a laboratory that had been waiting for years.

Scientists always begin with a question, then test it carefully.

"My question," said Lila, "is what everything in here does."

2. The Safe Experiment

On the bench sat baking soda, vinegar and a very patient balloon.

Lila measured, mixed, and stepped back to watch.

The fizzing was carbon dioxide gas, made when an acid meets a base.

The balloon filled up all by itself, and Lila wrote down every step.

3. Build Something New

A locked door opened when Lila finished her notes: the invention room.

Gears, wires, motors and a small solar panel waited on the table.

Engineers design, test, and then improve — again and again.

By morning, Lila had built a lamp that ran on sunshine alone.
