Nova loved to look up at the night sky.
Every evening, she spread out her blanket on the grass, pointed her telescope to the stars, and whispered, “Hello, universe.
What secrets will you show me tonight?”

One cool autumn night, as she adjusted the telescope knobs, something bright streaked across the sky.

Her grandpa chuckled.
“That’s no star, Nova.
That’s a comet.” “A comet?” she asked, eyes wide.

Nova leaned closer to the telescope.
The comet looked like a sparkling brushstroke across the black canvas of the sky.

“It’s beautiful.
Do comets live in the sky forever?”
7. Page 7
“Not forever,” Grandpa explained.
“They travel on very long journeys around the Sun.
Some take hundreds of years before they come back where we can see them again.”

Nova thought about that.
“So this comet could have been seen by people long ago?” “Exactly,” Grandpa said.
“Maybe explorers, scientists, or even kids like you wished upon it hundreds of years ago.”

Nova smiled.
She took out her notebook and wrote: Comet = icy traveler + glowing tail + very, very old friend.

Then she drew a picture of the comet, with stars dancing around it.

Before bed, Nova whispered to the comet outside her window: “Safe travels, glowing traveler.
I’ll see you again someday.”
